The mansion boasts an Olympic-standard swimming pool, banquet facilities, a running track, a playground, a shooting range, stables, and other amenities. In 2013, Kim Jong-un paid $7 million to purchase a 29-meter-long luxury yacht and traveled around the North Korean coast. He also has his palatial villa on the beach near Wonsan. Dennis Rodman, an American basketball player who visited North Korea, said of Kim Jong-un's life in Wonsan, "It's so luxurious it's akin to enjoying yourself alone in Hawaii."

According to a 2014 United Nations report, Kim Jong-un spent $30 million on liquor purchases, $37 million on electronic products, and $8.2 million on watches. Kim Jong-un wears ordinary black and white clothing and military uniforms in public, but in private he always enjoys luxury fashion. The report assessed total spending on luxury items among state expenditures at $645.8 million in 2012.

Kim Jong-un's love of cheese and wine is a secret known to all. Britain's Metro newspaper reported that Kim Jong-un had to cancel his attendance at a public event after overeating a large quantity of Emmentaler cheese brought in from Switzerland. In contrast, the average North Korean resident is supposed to receive a daily ration of just 650 grams of food. Of course, this provision has not been properly observed.
